Virginia Teen Flees Before Finishing Robbery At PA Bank: Police

A Virginia teen left in the middle of robbing a Pennsylvania bank only to be found along the railroad tracks— it might sound like a scene from an old movie, but that really happened on Wednesday, according to a release by police.

Gettysburg police were called after the teenager entered the M&T Bank on 202 West High Street, approached a teller and demanded money stating it was a robbery around 1 p.m. on Mar. 2, police say.

Officers from Cumberland Township, the National Park Service, and state police searched the area using a description of the suspect provided by bank employees, according to the release.

A witness, who heard the original dispatch call of the description, spotted the suspect near the railroad tracks behind the Post Office, police say.

Michael James Melnyk, 18, of Oakton, was arrested and identified by bank employees, the release shows.

Melnyk was charged with felony robbery and held in the Adams County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail, according to court documents.

His preliminary hearing has been scheduled before Magisterial District Judge Christopher A. Snyder at 11 a.m. on Mar. 9, court records show.
